Use NotebookLM when the answer has to come from this week’s PDFs. Use ChatGPT when you need a concept explained that is not in those files. Do not ask ChatGPT to cite a lecture it has not seen.

NotebookLM
You upload readings, slides, or notes. Chat, FAQs, study guides, and Audio Overviews stay inside that pile. It will not wander off to invent a paper that is not in the sources. That constraint is the product.
It is also the limit. If the answer is not in the files, NotebookLM cannot help. It does not schedule cards. After an Audio Overview, you still need a recall app if you want the material to stick.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT is the default AI tab. It is fast at explaining a concept you already met in class and dangerous as a stand-in for the reading. Plus is $20 a month. File uploads exist on paid plans; they are not a notebook with citations pinned to page numbers the way NotebookLM is.
It forgets your course between chats unless you rebuild the context. Check every citation. It will invent a paper you needed to be real.
Where Claude fits
Claude sits between them for a single long PDF: more context than a casual ChatGPT paste, less of a source-locked notebook than NotebookLM. Pro is also $20 a month. Use it for a dense paper. Do not use it as the archive of a whole module.
A sane setup
- Put this week’s PDFs in NotebookLM. Ask questions with the sources open.
- When a concept is missing from those files, ask ChatGPT or Claude, then go back to the reading.
- Turn what you still cannot recall into cards in Anki or Studycamp. The chat tab is not spaced practice.
Verdict
NotebookLM if the exam is on a known reading list. ChatGPT if you are stuck on a idea the syllabus assumed you had. Replacing one with the other is how people get fluent, unsourced answers.
