LanguageTool is a grammar checker with a browser add-on. Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. The free tier is usable for short work. Premium is in the same neighbourhood as Grammarly, around ten dollars a month billed yearly.
Self-hosting exists if you care. For most students the cloud free tier is the product. It will not rewrite the essay for you, which is a feature.
